Everyone needs some amount of sleep daily to function properly and stay healthy. In a Sun Paper article, “Wake Up To More Sleep” by Bob Condor, he stated that cheating ourselves on Z’s ( sleep) invites health problems, according to research that has been done. He said that sleep is the most under-rated part of staying healthy. Adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night, minimum. In our busy day and age, many are not getting what they need, which can also lead to healthiness issues.
It was noted that studies showed how adults who regularly cheated themselves out of sleep by two or three hours are more likely to die of cardiovascular problems. In a British study, it further revealed that women who sleep less than the 8 hours per night are at a higher risk for heart disease then men are, but both are at risk when the proper sleep is not received nightly. Obviously we each need different amounts of sleep, but it has been recommended that our bodies need the 7 to 8 hours nightly.

In a recent article titled, A Troubling Trend In Diabetes, Dr. Ranit Mishori stated that there has been a steady increase in the number of children that have Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. In a story from Parade Magazine, from October 18th, 2009, by Michael O’Shea, said that we are really what our friends eat. Our lives are greatly affected by the habits of those closest to us. That includes not just our eating habits, but also our other habits too, such as our exercise and fitness.
A study of 12,000 adults, that was referred to in Michael’s article, stated that a person’s cahnces of becoming obese increased by about 40% if a spouse or sibling became obese. That percentage jumped to 170% if those people had a friend that became obese. A separate study showed that college students adjusted their food intake based upon how much their companions ate. Both adults and children were affected. They said that youth’s weight and eating habits are influenced by their friends weight and eating habits.

This past Saturday, September 26th, was the start to Marathon Kids new program here in Baltimore,
Maryland. In the days of the all you can eat and fast food mentality, it is refreshing to witness plus take part in an awesome worthwhile program such as Marathon Kids.
Kay Morris, the founder and executive director, states that all kids can be a Marathon Kids. This is a free running/ walking, nutrition, and schoolyard gardening program that promotes the development of a healthy and active lifestyle for each child. Over the course of the school year, each participating child will run or walk 26.2 miles, a marathon, in increments of 1/4 to 1/2 mile at a time. Marathon Kids is for kindergarten through fifth grade, elementary age- normally ages 5 to 11.
